Mila Balti "By saying a word, they may think on something else" Peeter Allik If an Egyptian says:"You know, in Egypt we have developed during hundreds of years a building tradition for graves that have original pyramidal shape," then we have to believe him. But we, Estonian painters, have the fortune to initiate our traditions. Mila Balti has shot as a comet to the art world. The young artist from a small town Pärnu is not frightened of huge format and topics that need technical skills and proficiency. And last but not least she does not fear the aspiration of painters towards the total and all-embracing visual mystery. At the same time, when painters in cities seek for lost connections between the real world and traditional arts, Mila Balti tells in a fluent painting language stories about life itself. She does it fair and square. Pop figures are connected with pompous baroque, but it is not a game with kitsch as it was at the time of neopop, she shows us the bloody wound of kitsch itself. As a medium in arts it is mighty, harsh and impressive. The painting manipulates with public as political parties with pensioners. The story in one painting contrasts with another painting or comments the first story. It is not the simple personal story of Mila Balti, but something that concerns everyone. But at the same time, by saying a word, she also might think on something else |
